State officials and planners made some good choices in selecting four projects aimed at helping Terrebonne and Lafourche residents adapt as the Gulf of Mexico encroaches.
Gov. John Bel Edwards and officials with the La Safe program announced the projects Friday after roughly 18 months of public hearings, discussion and informal polling.
All of the selections stand to teach us something about adapting to the inevitable. The state coastal master plan’s most optimistic projections say the two parishes will lose nearly half their land over the next 50 years under the “medium” estimates for wetlands erosion, sea level rise, storms and sinking land.
La. Safe’s projects, funded by a competitive federal grant to help communities adapt to such changes, are touted as a complement to the master plan’s proposed levees, diver diversions and restoration work.
